In Indonesia, the education system has long implemented early childhood schooling. For example, a 5-year-old child attends kindergarten, then continues to elementary school at the age of 6. Even nowadays, toddlers are already being enrolled in playgroups, even though they have not been taught how to read and other subjects. However, according to teachers and academics in the UK, schooling at the ages of 5-7 is considered too rushed and can have negative impacts on a child's development.
Sir Al Aynsley Green, the former Children's Commissioner in the UK, stated in the Dailymail that early schooling can make children feel obligated to learn. At that age, children should be allowed to play. This can lead to children becoming more easily stressed and fearful of learning. Therefore, teachers and academics in the UK have agreed to reject the regulations on early schooling. The government spokesperson for education in the UK, Michael Gove, mentioned that they are still considering revisiting the mandatory schooling at the age of 5.
On the other hand, in Indonesia, children aged 5 or even 4 who attend kindergarten are already being taught how to read, write, and do math. So, there is no difference between a child who can read at the age of 4 and a child who can read at the age of 6. However, if this is forced, it will certainly have negative effects on the child's development since children at that age do not have enough mental readiness. As a result, children will easily feel bored, stressed, and lack concentration in their learning.
May it be beneficial.
